Career Journey
Artistic Foundations
Jean-Louis began his career as a conductor, composer, and artistic director, developing a particular interest in contemporary music, choral performance, and work created beyond conventional concert settings. Early projects included new music festivals, interdisciplinary collaborations, and the Wilderness Songs Project—an outdoor performance series exploring music within Canada’s natural landscapes.
Expanding the Practice
At Mount Royal University Conservatory, Jean-Louis led choral programs and founded Artio, a choral theatre ensemble integrating music, theatre, movement, and design. Alongside his artistic work, he taught at the University of Calgary, including the interdisciplinary course Approaching Interdisciplinarity. Over time, his practice expanded increasingly into program development, organizational strategy, operations, and international collaboration.
Executive Leadership
Since 2022, Jean-Louis has served as Executive Director of the Chilliwack Cultural Centre, leading programming, operations, financial strategy, staff, partnerships, and organizational development. His executive work brings together the threads that have shaped his career: artistic curiosity, interdisciplinary thinking, audience connection, and the development of sustainable cultural organizations.
Education & Academic Work
Jean-Louis holds a Master of Music in Conducting and a Bachelor of Arts in Music with studies in composition and musicology, both from the University of Calgary.
From 2016 to 2024, he served on the Music Faculty at the University of Calgary, where he redeveloped the Chamber Choir and taught Approaching Interdisciplinarity, a core Fine Arts course encouraging cross-disciplinary exploration and creative practice.
His teaching and mentorship have been recognized with a Teaching Excellence Award from Mount Royal University, reflecting a longstanding commitment to developing artists, encouraging creative curiosity, and connecting artistic practice with broader ways of thinking.
Academic work has remained an important thread throughout his career, complementing his work as an artist and arts leader.
Professional Engagement & Service
Jean-Louis contributes to broader conversations about cultural leadership, community connection, and the role of the arts in public life.
In 2024, he was a panelist at the Association of Asia-Pacific Performing Arts Centres Conference in Taipei, speaking on the relationship between performing arts organizations and the communities they serve.
He also contributes locally through the Chilliwack Creative Commission and the City of Chilliwack Public Art Advisory Committee, supporting the development of the creative sector and the integration of public art within the community.
Earlier in his career, Jean-Louis served as President and committee member of New Works Calgary, supporting contemporary music, new creation, and opportunities for local artists.
