This past week, I was deeply moved by messages from members of the Chinese Choir and Taiko community, sharing how meaningful it has been to see Eastern classical music embraced in a Conservatory setting traditionally rooted in Western traditions.
Although I’m no longer at the Conservatory, hearing that these programs continue to resonate is a beautiful reminder of how powerful inclusive programming can be. Music education flourishes when it reflects the diversity of the communities it serves—when the rhythms of Taiko or the tones of Chinese art song are given space alongside Bach and Brahms.
It’s a joy to see these traditions thriving side by side, and I’m grateful to have been a small part of that journey.
Here’s to the artists, educators, and institutions continuing to open the stage to a fuller expression of global music.
